Last year’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a massive hit for Marvel, earning a massive $1.3 billion at the global box office and becoming the first big mutant film (also, their first official R-rated offering) made by Marvel Studios since the “X-Men” rights reverted back to them. There is now something of an update on what is next for Ryan Reynolds.
In a new interview between Time Magazine and Reynolds, the Deadpool franchise actor/producer revealed that he’s “writing” a mysterious MCU project, alongside suggesting Wade Wilson works best in supporting roles, downplaying his future by joining the ranks of the Avengers, and X-Men.
“I’m writing a little something right now, that’s, I don’t know, it’s an ensemble…But, I like that [Deadpool] is isolated.” Reynolds teased to Time Magazine about what he’s cooking up at Marvel.
“If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end,” Reynolds said of future crossovers with big PG-13 MCU teams. “That’s wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that.” Suggesting that Deadpool works best in a supporting role, allowing other characters to shine.
So, while Wade might be appearing in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” the scale of his character’s screentime isn’t terribly known or even confirmed at this point. But, given these quotes from Reynolds, maybe Deadpool just won’t show up, and that Wade/Thor tease at the TVA was just a giant psyche-out gag.
We could theorize he’s trying to break story ideas for “Deadpool 4,” circling back to something like “X-Force” (was once going to happen before “Deadpool 3” at 20th Cenutry Fox with Drew Goddard writing and directing) as both Laura (James Mangold once developed a solo project) and Logan were members of that black-ops mutant team alongside Wade in the comics, and the Canadian mutant team “Alpha Flight” (given a small Easter Egg in “Deadpool 2“) could be on the table, too.
Then again, it could be something completely new.
Reynolds had previously revealed he was writing something non-Marvel related, with the idea that he’d work with Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy. That was eventually announced as a boy band project.
With that said, Levy is busy as he’s gearing up to shoot “Star Wars: Starfighter” with Ryan Gosling in the lead role, and a prime release date set for May 28, 2027. Making a fourth “Deadpool” installment is not exactly in the cards anytime soon for Levy and the team.
