The good folks over at MUBI, particularly Sam DiSalle, has compiled the most comprehensive list that you could imagine of every film/TV series that Scorsese has mentioned as one of his favorites in interviews and other sources over his entire career.

And when we say comprehensive, we mean comprehensive. Going in chronological order of release, DiSalle has compiled a list that is hundreds and hundreds of films and TV series long, beginning with 1903’s “The Great Train Robbery.” Overall, the list is comprised of 893 films (as of this writing) that ends with 2018’s “BlacKkKlansman.”

The sheer number of films makes sense, considering that Scorsese has had a decades-long career that has included hundreds of interviews. And as you might expect, the real bulk of this list is focused on films that date pre-1970. However, that doesn’t mean that modern films are given the cold shoulder. In addition to Spike Lee’s latest work, the list of Scorsese’s favorites includes such recent classics as “Old Boy” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

For those hoping to discover an older classic or a more recent film that they might have overlooked, this is an incredible starting point. However, much like those Netflix queues that are hundreds of titles long, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and intimidated by lists this size. So maybe just blindly choosing is the way to go.
