'Wonder Man': 'Shang Chi' Director Destin Daniel Cretton Is Producing A New Disney+ Series

The deeper the MCU gets into Phase 4 of its movie universe, the more and more it expands. And now it gets a little bit larger, as another Disney+ show starring a new Marvel hero is in development. This time, it’s “Wonder Man,” a superhero who has a lot of history with The Avengers in the comics.

Variety reports that Destin Daniel Cretton will develop the show for Disney+, and may possibly direct the series. “Wonder Man” may be the TV show that’s a part of Cretton’s overall deal with Marvel Studios from last December, when Marvel first announced he’d write and direct the sequel to “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings.” Also on board for the new show is Andrew Guest, who worked on last year’s “Hawkeye” as a consulting producer. Guest is best known for his work on super-popular TV comedies like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Community,” and “30 Rock.” So, maybe “Wonder Man” will have a comedic bent to it?

In the comics, Wonder Man’s real name is Simon Williams, the scion of a wealthy industrialist in competition with Tony Stark’s Stark Industries. When their company falls on hard times, Williams accepts an offer from Captain America villain Baron Zemo (played by Daniel Brühl in “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier“) to give him superpowers. In the comics, Wonder Man fights against The Avengers several times but ultimately joins their ranks. He’s arguably one of the last big-name holdouts from The Avengers that hasn’t yet joined the MCU.

Well, that looks like it’s about to change, as “Wonder Man” marks yet another upcoming project from Kevin Feige & co. Whether the series will be in Phase 4, Phase 5, or Phase whatever is undetermined. But given Baron Zemo’s involvement with both Wonder Man and the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie, it’s a little easier to see what direction Marvel’s future is going. As to who will play Wonder Man? Speculate away, Marvel fans.
