'Matrix 4': Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Lana Wachowski Are Officially Back For Another Film

Get ready to go back down the rabbit hole and decide on a new red or blue pill. Warner Bros. is getting most of the principals together once again for a fourth “Matrix” film. Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and director Lana Wachowski will all be returning for a “Matrix 4” which Wachowski will write and direct.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. “We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana,” Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich said today in a statement to Variety. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing, and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

Lilly Wachowski is not mentioned at all and apparently will not be part of the film. She recently publicly said she would not be involved in any “Matrix” films, but gave Warner Bros. their blessing to proceed forward. Clearly, something had already been in the works, and she wasn’t at liberty to say anything yet. Before that, the Wachowskis had dissolved their production company, which many saw as a sign of retirement, but now obviously points to the creative split between them. Lilly Wachowski is currently co-writing and producing a Showtime comedy series starring Abby McEnany and has clearly moved on to other creative endeavors. The news comes on the heels of 30th anniversary of “The Matrix.” Warner Bros. is putting the movie back on screens on August 30.

Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell have also written the film with Wachowski which is eyeing a production start date at the beginning of 2020.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski said in a statement.

Right now there’s no other word if any previous “Matrix” cast members like Lawrence Fishburne will return. Rumors of a new “Matrix” series have been swirling for years, and at one point, screenwriter Zak Penn (“The Avengers“) was said to be involved. His name is definitely not part of this equation though. No release date for the film either, but if the picture shoots early 2020, summer 2021 won’t be out of the question.
