Michelle Williams & Kelly Reichardt Reunite For A24 Film ‘Showing Up’

2020 probably wasn’t an awesome year for most people, considering everything going on in the world. But for filmmaker Kelly Reichardt, it was pretty great. Having released her feature “First Cow,” the writer-director earned some of the best reviews of her already-great career and is seemingly in line for some Oscar love soon. And she’s not slowing down anytime soon by reuniting with one of her favorite collaborators, Michelle Williams, for a brand-new movie going into production this year.

According to Deadline, Reichardt is hoping to begin production on a new film with Michelle Williams, titled “Showing Up.” The film tells the story of an artist getting ready for a new exhibition that could mark a big change in her career. And as she deals with family, friends, and colleagues, the chaos turns into fodder for new art. “Showing Up” marks the fourth film project that Wiliams and Reichardt will work together on, previously teaming up for features “Wendy & Lucy,” “Meek’s Cutoff,” and “Certain Women.”

As mentioned, Reichardt is riding high right now with all the acclaim that “First Cow” has received over the past year. Having premiered at Telluride in 2019, the film was finally released early last year and was immediately hailed as one of the best features of 2020. The film has already gone on to win the Best Picture trophy from the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

Williams has been pretty busy lately with some decidedly non-Reichardt projects. She’s shown up in 2018’s “Venom,” which led to her reprising her role in the upcoming sequel, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” She also won rave reviews for her role in the FX series, “Fosse/Verdon.” Her most recent feature was the drama, “After the Wedding.”

“Showing Up” doesn’t have a release date yet, but A24 hopes the film will go into production sometime this summer, which means it’s likely that a 2022 release is in the cards.
