'Mid90s' Trailer: Jonah Hill's Directorial Debut Evokes The Skate Or Die Life Of 'Kids'

Not so long ago, Jonah Hill starred in a little film about growing up fans know as “Superbad.” While the actor has grown in his career, showing off his dramatic skills along the way, audiences will get a chance to see his work behind the camera with his feature-length directorial debut “Mid90s.”

In an interview featured by Collider, Hill discussed the inspiration that was provided by films “Kids” (Larry Clark) and “This Is England” (Shane Meadows). Hill serves as director and writer of this coming-of-age story. If you’re a film nerd like most of us, you’ll likely enjoy knowing the actual feature was shot in 16mm, skating stuff was shot on super 8. The featured songs in the trailer have a bit of backstory as well. The first song is “After Laughter (Comes Tears)” by Wendy Rene. Fun fact, it was also a song sampled by the Wu-Tang Clan, presumably used in the movie since you see Wu-Tang posters on the kids’ walls. The second song is Omega‘s “Gyöngyhajú lány,” an obscure Hungarian rock band that Kanye West sampled on “New Slaves” from his album, “Yeezus.”

The film stars Sunny Suljic, who previously unnerved audiences in last year’s “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” Katherine Waterston also stars, along with Lucas Hedges who is poised for quite the year with “Boy Erased” hitting theaters this November. Like the films that inspired him, Hill’s “Mid90s” will likely be a complicated examination of growing up with the backdrop provided by Los Angeles and the 1990s.

Here’s the official synopsis.

Written and directed by Jonah Hill, Mid90s follows Stevie, a thirteen-year-old in 90s-era LA who spends his summer navigating between his troubled home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.

“Mid 90s” hits theaters October 19. Take a look at the trailer below:
