The filmography of Nick Cassavetes is an interesting subject to dissect. You have a crime thriller like “John Q” followed by the gold standard for modern romantic dramas, “The Notebook.” Then there’s “Alpha Dog” and “My Sister’s Keeper.” And his most recent film is 2014’s rom-com “The Other Woman.” All this to say, the writer-director is known for keeping film fans on their toes. This leads us to his next project, an Allman Brothers biopic.
According to Deadline, Nick Cassavetes is teaming up with Sunset Blvd Films to bring the story of The Allman Brothers Band to the big screen in a new untitled biopic. The film is based on Scott Freeman’s biography, “Midnight Riders: The Story of the Allman Brothers Band” and tells the story of the legendary rock band from Florida with hit songs such as “Ramblin’ Man” and “Midnight Rider.”
“I grew up a huge fan of The Allman Brothers,” Cassavetes said. “They had a profound influence on the music culture in America and I’m honored to be able to have an opportunity to tell their story.”
Sunset Blvd Films President Len Fico added, “Nick brings passion, perceptive, and integrity to this multi-dimensional saga. Beyond creating music that became a cultural touchstone, the Allmans’ story is one of tragic death, betrayal, drug and alcohol use, and eventually exoneration and redemption. Nick’s abilities to bring flawed but empathic characters to the screen makes him the only logical choice for the Allmans’ story.”
It’s unclear when work might start on the Allman Brothers film, as Cassavetes is still putting the finishing touches on his upcoming film, “God is a Bullet,” which stars Jamie Foxx, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and January Jones. A release date for that film has yet to be announced.
