Oscar Isaac Says His 'Star Wars' Days Are Likely Over & Calls 'Card Counter' A Career “Turning Point”

Oscar Isaac has one of the more eclectic acting careers amongst A-listers today. Over the years, he’s worked for filmmakers such as Nicolas Winding Refn (“Drive”), Zack Snyder (“Sucker Punch”), the Coen Brothers (“Inside Llewyn Davis”), Alex Garland (“Ex Machina”), and Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”), just to name several. He’s done everything from low-budget indies to one of the biggest franchises of all time (“Star Wars”). But it appears that Isaac is ready to plot out a new course for his career, and he’s using Paul Schrader’s upcoming film, “The Card Counter,” as a fresh start.

Speaking to Deadline, Isaac talked about his upcoming drama, “The Card Counter,” which is set to begin production once again in July, and why that film is a “turning point” in his career.

“I’ve felt like I had been a man in a desert for many years because I’ve been serving these bigger films,” Isaac explained.

Schrader chimed in and joked that Isaac has been in a “blue screen desert.”

Those “bigger films” are most likely a reference to the three “Star Wars” sequels, as well as the upcoming “Dune.” And now that he has a few “Star Wars” films under his belt, as well as the upcoming “Dune” film adaptation, it appears Isaac is using “The Card Counter” as a springboard back into smaller, indie films.

“It feels for me like a personal turning point,” the actor added.

Yes, “Star Wars” fans, that means the fan-favorite Poe Dameron’s days of fighting evil are likely done. Well, according to Isaac, there is one reason why he would return to the Lucasfilm franchise. He joked that he would suit up as Dameron one more time if he “needs another house.”

So, even though Isaac does say that he joined his time working on those big-budget blockbusters, he’s ready to work on more personal films. And if that means we get to see the actor team with filmmakers like Schrader more often, we’re completely okay with that decision.
