Jim Caviezel Confirms 'Passion Of The Christ' Sequel Is Still Happening, Calls It "The Biggest Film In World History"

It seems Jesus will return, with a vengeance. Where “The Passion of the Christ” became a huge box office juggernaut, amassing nearly $400 million at the domestic box office and still holding the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. Over a decade later, star Jim Caviezel confirms the sequel, “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection” is still in the works, and it will be bigger than the original.

Speaking with Breitbart News, Caviezel confirmed the status of the sequel film. “Mel Gibson just sent me the third picture, the third draft. It’s coming,” the actor said. “It’s called ‘The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection’. It’s going to be the biggest film in world history.”

There is a lot to digest right there. In the interview, Caviezel draws a direct comparison between Jesus and superheroes like Superman, does that mean we’ll see more big-budget miracles performed on-screen? Caviezel also talks about how, according to him, Hollywood is less open to biblical films than it used to be. This could be the perfect opportunity for Mel Gibson to bring back the kind of grand-scale biblical epic like “The Ten Commandments” or “Ben-Hur,” though having hundreds of thousands of extras post-pandemic could be a bit hard.

Another interesting point noted by Looper is that the film could become cause for controversy in how it handles the days leading up to the titular resurrection. While Catholics, like Gibson himself, believe that Jesus spent the three days before coming back to life preaching in Hell, evangelicals don’t believe Jesus spent his days chatting with Satan.

If Gibson decides to include any of this in his script, “Resurrection” has the potential of being as controversial as “The Last Temptation of Christ” was, and be even a bit more interesting than the original “Passion” was.
