‘Dope’ Filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa To Direct A Magic Johnson Docuseries

If “The Last Dance” has proven anything, it’s that people are willing to watch hours and hours of behind-the-scenes footage from iconic superstar athletes, such as NBA legend Michael Jordan. And as we know, if a studio hits it big with a new idea, then others will begin to take that formula and run with it. With that in mind, it appears that XTR, H.wood Media, Delirio Films, and New Slate Ventures are all set to collaborate on a new docuseries following another NBA icon, Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

According to the production companies, the untitled docuseries will chronicle the incredible career of Magic Johnson from his time in the NBA to his post-career life, not only as a hugely successful businessman but also as a leader in the Black community. And perhaps the best news of all is that director Rick Famuyiwa has been signed on to helm the series.

“As a kid who grew up in Inglewood, California during the Showtime era, I’m so happy to help bring the story of Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson to the screen,” said Famuyiwa. “This project is a convergence of so many things that excite and interest me as a filmmaker. Magic has lived an extraordinary life as a champion athlete, passionate activist, and highly successful entrepreneur. The impact of Magic’s life on the game of basketball and beyond is undeniable. I look forward to working with our talented creative team to bring this documentary to life.”

Famuyiwa is probably best known for his feature film, “Dope,” which debuted in 2015. Previous to that, he helmed features such as “The Wood,” “Talk to Me,” and “Our Family Wedding.” He’s one of the most sought-after filmmakers working today, with a number of high-profile projects in development. Most recently, he ventured into the realm of TV series, helming episodes of the critically acclaimed series such as “The Chi” and “The Mandalorian.” Adding to the good news, it appears that Famuyiwa is bringing along his “Dope” cinematographer (and Oscar nominee) Rachel Morrison as another collaborator for the new docuseries.

Here’s how the production company describes the docuseries:

Johnson’s legacy as one of basketball’s all-time greatest players to achieving renowned business success as the Chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises will be showcased front and center. Beyond his myriad accomplishments on the court (five championship wins, three MVP titles, twelve All Star games and one Olympic gold medal), Magic’s exceptional business acumen, ability to transform urban America with unparalleled business deals, and role as a pillar of strength and leadership within the black community have cemented his place as one of the most influential sports figures of all time.

A release date for the docuseries, as well as an eventual distributor, have yet to be announced. However, with Famuyiwa and Morrison attached, in addition to the popularity of the recent “The Last Dance” docuseries, there’s no doubt that plenty of distributors will be lining up to showcase the series.
