Rihanna & Rooney Mara Won't Be In Leos Carax's ‘Annette’ With Adam Driver After All

A new movie from French arthouse wonder Leos Carax starring Adam Driver, Rooney Mara, and Rihanna sounded like a dream. And indeed, that’s all it ever will be, as “Annette” moves forward but without two-thirds of that leading trio.

Word has arrived that both pop star Rihanna and the always-excellent Rooney Mara will not be in the movie. No word on why they’ve exited the project, a musical that will feature new tunes by the band Sparks, but it’s certainly a bummer that Carax’s English-language debut won’t have them. Still, we can be happy that we’re getting a new movie from Carax at all, and one starring Adam Driver is something to look forward to regardless. As for the story, it’ll revolve around a stand-up comedian, whose opera-singer wife is deceased, and his two-year-old daughter, who has a surprising gift.

Production on “Annette” begins this spring, with Driver jumping from Terry Gilliam‘s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” right into this. Amazon has already snapped up the U.S. and Canadian rights. [Pitchfork/Indiewire]
