Robert Downey, Jr. Talks The (Potential) End Of Tony Stark And His Busy Film Slate

Sadly, it looks like the days of Robert Downey, Jr. putting on the CGI armored suit in “Avengers” films is coming to an end. While we don’t know for certain what the future holds for Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in “Avengers: Infinity War,” it’s clear that there will be casualties, and how fitting would it be if the man who started it all was the person who saw his end in the massive battle with Thanos?

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, RDJ spoke whether we can expect more from Tony Stark in the future, and what else the actor has lined up. Because, you know, he’s also a world-class, award-winning actor. He’s not actually just Tony stark.

Of course, it’s hard to believe that Downey, Jr. isn’t Tony Stark. The character and actor have been so intertwined over the last decade, that EW had to ask how much of Tony Stark is RDJ and vice versa. “I ain’t him, I’ll tell you that flat out. There’s always a bit of a burn off period when they run out of call sheets for me. I’m just a f—ing actor. I’m just a guy who does have a very interesting past, who does not regret it, who wished to shut the door on it. I think that that translates,” says Downey, Jr.

But really what everyone wants to know is if Tony Stark is going to survive the events of “Infinity War.” RDJ says, “I’m definitely a hang up your jersey before they boo you off the court type guy, just because I still have an appropriate fear of embarrassment.” Over the years, he’s toyed with wording in interviews about quitting the MCU, but never has he been this overt about it.

Regardless of what happens at the end of ‘Infinity War’ or the still-untitled “Avengers 4,” Downey, Jr. has plenty of work ahead of him. Just recently, it was announced that he and his wife would be producing a new Doctor Doolittle film, titled “The Voyage of Doctor Doolittle.” But that’s not all!

“Then there’s all this stuff down the pike. We’re looking at another ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ we’re developing ‘Perry Mason’ for HBO. I still want to do ‘Pinocchio,’” says RDJ.

So, even if Tony Stark defies expectations, and survives the two new “Avengers” films, it looks like Robert Downey, Jr. might be a little too busy to put on the suit again.

And let’s talk about the new suit! As you can see from the EW cover, Iron Man is getting some sweet upgrades. Described as the “Bleeding Edge” suit, which was borrowed from the comics, Tony Stark can now become Iron Man much the same way that Black Panther puts on his suit, with the use of nano-technology. It also allows for Stark to leave Earth and battle in space. Which, you know, is super important when a homicidal space alien, named Thanos, threatens to wipe out everyone in the galaxy.
