Simon Kinberg Says Upcoming 'Gambit' Film Is Going To Be A Romantic Comedy (Seriously)

For a minute, let’s pretend that Fox is actually going to make a “Gambit” film (which has been rumored to have an early 2019 start date on production). Let’s forget that producers can’t seem to keep a director on it to save their lives. Let’s also imagine a world where the film will go into production before the impending Disney/Fox merger that will happen in the first half of 2019. And definitely, don’t think about the fact that Channing Tatum is willing to star in a film from a dying film company that is almost sure to never have a sequel. Okay? Good. Now, let’s talk about how Simon Kinberg, producer of “Gambit” and all the “X-Men” films, says that the supposed upcoming film is going to be a romantic comedy. Yep, brace yourself for the world’s first superhero rom-com…with a Cajun flair.

In a new interview with IGN, Kinberg discusses the definitely, sure-bet (*wink, wink*) “X-Men” spin-off film “Gambit.” And to our surprise, the film about a Cajun thief with the ability to charge inanimate objects with energy, making them explosive won’t be a heist film. No, no, no. It’s a rom-com.

“When you look at Gambit,” Kinberg said, “he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

He continues, “’Deadpool’ was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, ‘Logan’ was a western, ‘Gambit’s’ gonna be a romantic comedy, and ‘New Mutants’ is very decidedly a horror film.”

You have to commend Kinberg on wanting to try something new with “Gambit.” Superhero film fans are definitely savvy nowadays and require something unique with their Marvel movies. The typical origin story just isn’t going to fly. Plus, let’s be honest, Gambit is a character that has always sort of been a joke, right?

But will we really see “X-Men” meets “You’ve Got Mail?” Kinberg clarifies, “You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for ‘Logan’ loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in ‘Logan.’ It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of ‘Gambit’ has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

Disney, are you out there? Can you please wrap up all those loose ends and make this deal final, already? Sure, it’s going to cost people jobs and probably screw up the entire entertainment industry forever. But just save us from the threat of “Gambit.” Thanks!
