'Solo' Director Ron Howard Confirms There Is No Sequel In The Works, So Please Stop Saying There Is

To the surprise of no one, it seems “Solo: A Star Wars Story” will remain as a solo film, with Ron Howard himself confirming the lack of any plans for a sequel. So, please, can we stop pretending there will be one?

While talking to SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, Howard confirmed the obvious when asked about returning to work on the sequel. “Well, there’s no sequel planned now,” Howard said without skipping a beat. “It’s amazing to be a part of a Star Wars movie that seems to be a kind of underground hit, which is not what you’d expect, but that’s been an odd, strange journey for that movie.”

This question comes in the aftermath of a week full of rumors about “Solo” continuing in some form or another. There have been reports of Donald Glover‘s Lando getting his own Disney+ spin-off, or a sequel film being in the works. And yet, no matter how entertaining and fun “Solo” was, the film still underperformed and received a lukewarm reception.

Recently, even Alden Ehrenreich seemed to be unsure he’d even want to star in any potential “Solo” sequel, saying “It depends on what it is. It depends on how it’s done. It depends if it feels innate to the story.”

Still, if any of Disney-era “Star Wars” films set up possible spin-offs or sequels, it was “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” The basic idea of Han and Chewie going on adventures and doing small smuggling jobs fits perfectly with a TV format. And we also can’t forget about other characters like Emilia Clarke‘s Qi’ra and her journey as a new crime boss together with Darth Maul himself. But, then again, Disney isn’t exactly in the business of making sequels to films that barely broke even at the box office.

In the meantime, with Howard putting the rumors to bed, we should all follow his example and stop reporting unconfirmed rumors.
