Sylvester Stallone Teams With 'Overlord' Director For New Superhero Film 'Samaritan'

Sylvester Stallone might have just released the supposed swan song for his “Rambo” franchise with the recent ‘Last Blood,’ but that doesn’t mean the actor is slowing down anytime soon. In fact, it appears that he’s already got his next film lined up, the superhero project titled “Samaritan.”

According to Deadline, Stallone is teaming up with director Julius Avery for the upcoming superhero film “Samaritan.” The film is said to follow a young boy that is on the search for a missing superhero that disappeared twenty years prior. One would assume that Stallone would portray the mythic hero.

“Sly is a hero of mine, I’m incredibly thrilled to be working with such an iconic actor on this very special project with Balboa Productions and MGM,” Avery said.

Avery is best known for his recent film “Overlord,” which was an underrated genre war film from last year. Before that, the director released the 2014 film “Son of a Gun.” Before “Samaritan,” it was revealed that Avery had been hired to write and direct a “Flash Gordon” reboot. However, with the Disney purchase of Fox and the “Flash Gordon” film being retooled with Taika Waititi subsequently hired (and maybe still attached?), it looks like Avery has moved on to this film as his “Overlord’ follow-up.

“Samaritan” is written by Bragi F. Schut. The screenwriter was most credited for the script of “Escape Room,” the surprise horror hit from earlier this year. He’s also the man who wrote “Season of the Witch.” Schut is also attached to the forthcoming “Escape Room 2.”

No release date has been set for “Samaritan,” but filming is said to begin in early 2020. So it’s likely we’re still at least a year or so away from seeing Stallone suit up as a superhero.
