Who else will join Zoey Deutch and Emily Bader on Netflix‘s “The 99’ers,” the streamer’s drama about the 1999 US Women’s National Soccer team? Deadline reports that Emilia Jones and Alessandro Nivola are the latest to join the cast. Jones will play US team member Julie Foudy in the film, while Nivola is Tony DiCicco, the team’s head coach from 1994-1999.
Nicole Kassell directs “The 99’ers,” based on Jeré Longman‘s 2000 book “The Girls Of Summer: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team And How It Changed The World.” For those who don’t remember, the 1999 US Women’s National Soccer Team won the World Cup Final against all odds, claiming victory on a dramatic penalty kick against China.
Deutch will play soccer executive Marla Messing in the film, while Bader plays soccer star Mia Hamm. Katie Lovejoy, Dana Stevens, and Peter Hedges co-write the film, with Jill Mazursky and Jamee Decio original writers on the project.
Producers on the “The 99’ers” include Liza Chazin via 3Dot Productions, Hayley Stool and Ross Greenburg, with Messing, Mazursky, and Krista Smith on board as executive producers.
Jones is fresh off Brad Ingelsby‘s HBO drama “Task,” as well as Edgar Wright‘s “The Running Man.” Other upcoming projects for the actress include A24‘s Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony” opposite Dominic Sessa.
As for Nivola, he’s coming off a hot couple of years that include pivotal roles in “The Brutalist,” “The Room Next Door,” and “Downtown Abbey: The Grand Finale.” He also starred in the Apple TV+ series “The Big Cigar,” and currently stars in the FX limited series “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” as fashion designer Calvin Klein.
Expect “The 99’ers” to premiere on Netflix in 2027, but a late 2026 release isn’t far-fetched.
