The danger of setting a precedent for always upping the ante with the stunts you perform in a film is that you always have to up the ante each and every time. So, when you’re Tom Cruise and you’ve hung outside of airplanes, jumped from building rooftop to building rooftop, done insanely difficult skydiving, and climbed outside the world’s tallest building, where do you go next? Well, naturally, space is the final frontier.
According to Deadline, that’s exactly where Tom Cruise is thinking about going next. The report claims that the “Mission: Impossible” actor, who is either someone that is completely trusting of his crew that ensures his safety during these insane stunts or is definitely looking for a way to kill himself while filming a movie, is apparently discussing the possibility of teaming with Elon Musk and the businessman’s Space X venture for a new narrative action film that will be produced in space.
Obviously, it’s still too early to know what the new action film might look like, as there’s no title or plot to speak of. But clearly, Cruise knows that at some point, people are going to expect something truly special from his stunt work. And really, the man is running out of options. Like it or not, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie’s ability to tell a great story (the man is probably the best action filmmaker working today) is secondary to whatever insane stunt the A-lister subjects himself to in whatever new “Mission: Impossible” film is released. People just expect it.
What is known is that this new project doesn’t have a studio attached to it and is not going to be part of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. The popular film series that has spanned two decades is said to wrap up after the upcoming sequels are released. I mean, that is if Tom Cruise is willing to step away. The man is turning 58 this summer and is going to have to hang up his stunt boots eventually, right?…right???
