Tom Holland Calls ‘The Odyssey’ An “Absloute Masterpiece,” Reshoots For ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Added “Humor” While Beefing Up “Villain Plotline”

2026 was already a big year for actor Tom Holland after his quiet marriage to longtime partner and co-star Zendaya, as the newlyweds will also be seen together in Destin Daniel Cretton‘s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and Christopher Nolan‘s Greek myth epic “The Odyssey,” where Holland plays the son of Matt Damon‘s King Odysseus.

In a new interview with GQ Magazine, Holland is teasing and hyping up what audiences can expect from the two high-profile blockbusters. When it comes to how Nolan executed the visual effects for “The Odyssey,” which Holland calls an “absolute masterpiece,” being wowed by how many practical techniques were used over CGI (Nolan has been hellbent on making the fantasy film with limited CG shots).

“There were certain sequences in the movie where I’m watching it, and I’m just sort of thinking like, ‘How on earth has he done that? That has to be CG.’ And then after the movie, asking [Nolan], ‘That was definitely CG, right?’ And he’s like, ‘No, no, no, that’s all in camera effects. Very planned, very prepared.’ So I think fans are going to be really, really blown away by the set pieces and sequences throughout the movie.”

Holland also teased how the recent “Spider-Man” installment got additional scenes shot, highlighting how were doing those scenes to help add humor (a key part of Peter Parker’s Spidey persona and explored heavily in the comic books) and “their attempt to layer in a beef up the “villain plotline,” but what that exactly means is a little unclear as he stopped short of revealing who all the villains are (we already know officially that Scorpion, Tarantula, Boomerang, and The Hand are going to be toe-to-toe with the web-head).

“The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor. We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff,” Holland told GQ about the MCU sequel getting a round of reshoots (common with all Marvel Studios projects and mostly built into existing production budgets, mind you).

The fourth Holland/Spidey flick sees him reuniting with Mark Ruffalo‘s Bruce Banner/Hulk, and his “The Odyssey” co-star Jon Bernthal reprises The Punisher role as well, with Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Tramell Tillman, and Michael Mando also among the main cast.

Others in the cast of Nolan’s latest effort are Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Corey Hawkins, Ryan Hurst, Lupita Nyong’o, Logan Marshall-Green, Will Yun Lee, Samantha Morton, and rapper Travis Scott.

“The Odyssey” releases on July 16, with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (which has broken a slew of trailer viewership records after debuting last month) coming out on July 31. So, audiences certainly will have plenty of Holland movie options this summer.
