What’s next for Charlize Theron after “The Old Guard 2” finally made it onto Netflix earlier this year? Well, the actress has Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey” next summer, and “Apex,” a survivalist thriller, after that. But what lies beyond that?
Deadline reports the actress is circling a role that sounds like it could be a tour de force for her: “Tyrant,” a thriller set in NYC’s high-end culinary world. Official plot details remain scarce right now, but David Weil writes and directs the film, based on a story by Weil and Cody Behan. The buzzy package caught Theron’s eyes over the summer, and once she expressed interest in the lead role, Amazon MGM Studios quickly landed the spec script after a bidding war. Now Theron and Studio are on the lookout for who will star opposite the actress: another female role.
What else do we know about “Tryant” at this point? If she signs on, Theron will also produce the film via her Secret Menu banner with partners Beth Kono and A.J. Dix. Weil also produces with partner Natalie Laine Williams. Co-writers on the script with Weil include The Picture Company‘s Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona, who also produce.
“Tyrant” isn’t the only project Weil has in the pipeline. The writer-director also recently sold his script, “Supermax,” to Miramax, which he co-wrote with David J. Rosen. David Gordon Green is attached to helm that one starting this Spring, with The Picture Company on board to produce. Weil also pens Edward Berger‘s latest thriller over at United Artists, based on a Wall Street Journal foreign correspondent’s imprisonment in a Russian jail on charges of espionage. Weil writes “Extraction 3” starring Chris Hemsworth over at Netflix, too.
As for Theron, other upcoming projects for the actress beyond “The Odyssey,” “Apex,” and “Tyrant” include “Jane,” a psychological thriller loosely based on the life of sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. Alfonso Cuarón directs that one, with Jack Thorne penning the script. Theron i also set to star in Justin Lin‘s “Two For The Monkey,” a heist film, but that won’t shoot until next year.
Stay tuned for more details on “Tyrant,” like who will star opposite Theron, as they become available.
