It's simple math folks. "Ted" was the biggest and most surprising comedy smash hit of the summer, hauling in just under $395 million dollars worldwide. Not bad for an R-rated movie not based on a pre-existing property. Hell, those are great numbers any way you slice it. And even though the $180 million or so take for "The Bourne Legacy" puts it at the bottom rung of the franchise, the interest in the character is still there and the quality hasn't dropped off either. So what's next? Sequels, duh.
Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2012 Media, Communications & Technology conference in Los Angeles (yawn…zzzz), NBC Universal honcho Steve Burke assured money types that the studio is expecting to push ahead with more 'Bourne' films and also make a follow-up to "Ted" "as soon as we can."
Of course, when either of these will actually happen is anyone's guess. Seth MacFarlane is usually busy with about two dozen various projects at any given moment so he'll need to find some space to write. And as for 'Bourne,' it's all just ideas at best at the moment. "The idea that there's some sort of master plan, and that we've talked about what will be next is crazy, there hasn't. We don't have it together, we're just working so hard to get this film done. There's no master plan about what happens next," writer/director Tony Gilroy told us this summer.
But either way, it confirms that MacFarlane's big hit and new comic creation will be headed back to movie screens and Aaron Cross and/or Jason Bourne aren't finished yet either. [THR]
