Viggo Mortensen Optimistic About Role In Del Toro's 'Hobbit', Project Extends To A Trilogy?

In an interview at the recent Empire Awards (not on April 1st, Monday!), Viggo Mortensen has revealed that Guillermo Del Toro is planning to write his character, Aragorn, into the upcoming prequels to “Lord Of The Rings.”

“They’ve got a Mexican making it now, with Guillermo del Toro, who’s very talented. Now as far as I know, we’re [Mortensen’s Aragorn and Sean Bean’s Boromir – Bean was present at the interview] not in “The Hobbit” but they’re going to try and find a way, just for fun. I’m not necessarily against the idea. They may try to link that book to the book we were in,” Mortensen explained.

Earlier this year, Elijah Wood talked to MTV about Del Toro and Peter Jackson’s plan to base the first of two planned prequel on J.R.R. Tolkein’s ‘Hobbit’ with the second taking place “between the 60 years that happened between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”.” We assume that Mortensen is backing up what Wood said and is referring to his character being apart of the second ‘link’ film.

A LOTR fan site, meanwhile, is reporting the studios are planning to extend the prequel into a trilogy. We must warn you, this does smell an awful lot like a April’s Fool Joke but as it was published on March 31st, we thought we’d give it a whirl. Stay tuned for more details or confirmation of a poorly played joke. Buyer beware.

The original plan is for “The Hobbit” to shoot throughout 2010 with the two films being released a year apart LOTR-style in 2011 and 2012.
