Zach Cregger Won’t Be “Completely Obedient To The Lore Of The Games” For His “Compelling” New ‘Resident Evil’ Movie

It certainly feels like we’re in a different era when it comes to appealing video game adaptations with the likes of “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” making waves on the small screen alongside the massive financial success of Legendary‘s “A Minecraft Movie.” So, when it comes to Zach Cregger‘s “Resident Evil” reboot at Sony Pictures, we can’t wait to see what the new voice in the horror genre ends up doing with the property.

Cregger, the writer/director behind “Barbarian” and the upcoming “Weapons,” recently told SFX Magazine (via Bloody Disgusting) that while he’s admittedly a massive fan of the “Resident Evil” games, he isn’t looking to be “completely obedient to the lore” and is mostly focusing on trying to tell a “compelling” story.

“I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I’ve played them all. I don’t know how many times I’ve just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it. I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games.” “I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online,” Cregger said of his action horror reboot and naysayers from the fan community. “So all I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that’s compelling. I know that I’m gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.”

If you’re unfamiliar with the basic gist of the Capcom games, you play a survivor of an outbreak of the T-virus, a bio-weapon created by the Umbrella Company that escapes their facility. The T-virus ends up infecting the population of Raccoon City, turning humans into zombies and other mutant creatures.

That’s not it as Cregger is attempting to do something unique and won’t be mirroring his previous features with the remake, “I will also say, I’ve never seen a movie like it. It doesn’t jump around like ‘Weapons’ and ‘Barbarian,’ but it is still unto itself.”

Quite the tantalizing tease from the filmmaker, considering it felt like “Resident Evil” lost a lot of steam after the previous film reboot and TV adaptations failed to attract audiences. We’re still waiting on what the final casting for “Resident Evil” will look like, beyond on-the-rise actor Austin Abrams (“Weapons,” “Wolfs,” “Euphoria”) being linked for a lead role in the horror pic.
