Watch A Beautiful New Michel Gondry Video For An Unreleased White Stripes Song

Before “Be Kind Rewind,” before “Eternal Sunshine” before even “Human Nature,” Michel Gondry broke through, like David Fincher, Spike Jonze and many more, as a music video helmer. He did stunning, innovative work for the likes of The Chemical Brother, Bjork and Radiohead, but one of the artists he might be most associated with are The White Stripes — Gondry directed a number of videos for the band, including the famous lo-fi Lego animation of “Fell In Love With A Girl,” and the innovative, much-imitated “The Hardest Button To Button” clip.

Jack & Meg White’s band broke up in 2011, but somehow that hasn’t stopped Gondry from making a new video for them, as Vulture reported. The group are issuing a new compilation, “Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016,” and Gondry filmed (apparently on spec, only approaching White after it was done) a clip for the song “City Lights,” originally written for the “Get Behind Me Satan” album.

It sees an unknown figure drawing a series of pictures on the condensation of a shower pane, and it showcases the kind of visual invention and romantic whimsy that’s defined Gondry from the very beginning. While we wait for news on the director’s next film (and you could always go and catch up on his excellent, little-seen last one “Microbe & Gasoline”), it’ll keep us busy until then.
