Considering the incoming and ongoing onslaught of festival coverage, it can be easy to lose sight of some of the scheduled releases coming out this September. There’s a lot going on across the globe, from Venice to Telluride, Toronto, and then New York. But still, looking ahead, plenty of theatrical and streaming releases are arriving this month – some on the heels of their premieres at Sundance or Cannes, which will be finding new and enthusiastic audiences.
Fall 2025 Film Preview: 61 Movies To Watch
September can be a weird month, but it’s also coming from summer with less foot traffic for theatrical releases. This month is stacked, however, with plenty of independent releases to major horror films such as the latest from the fan-favorite franchise “The Conjuring” to the hotly anticipated Stephen King adaptation, “The Long Walk,” and more to tee up the autumnal spirit. Beyond that, there are the latest from highly revered filmmakers, from the newest from Paul Thomas Anderson and Kogonada.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites”
The supernatural horror franchise from director Michael Chaves returns with “The Conjuring: Last Rites.” Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as paranormal investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren in the ninth and final installment of the series, as the two try to vanquish a demon from a family’s home. Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy also return.
Release Date: In theaters September 5 via Warner Bros. Pictures.
“Preparation for the Next Life”
Bing Liu made a significant impact with his first documentary feature, “Minding the Gap,” in 2018. He now shifts from documentary to fiction with his latest, “Preparation for the Next Life.” Sebiye Behtiyar and Fred Hechinger star in the film adapted from the novel of the same name, which follows the story of an Uyghur migrant in New York looking for more who believes her life is beginning to change upon meeting and falling in love with an American soldier.
Release Date: In theaters September 5 via Amazon MGM Studios.
“The Baltimorons”
Filmmaker Jay Duplass embraces his relationship-focused roots with his latest directorial effort, “The Baltimorons.” The film follows a newly sober man who, on Christmas Eve, must undergo emergent dental surgery, where he falls for his dentist. Co-written by the star, Michael Strassner, the film also stars Liz Larsen and Olivia Luccardi.
Release Date: In theaters September 5 via Sapan Studios.
