While “Run Lola Run” director Tom Tykwer‘s collaboration with the Wachowskis on “Cloud Atlas” is prepping for its forthcoming shoot, his romantic drama “3” has a trailer that’s just hitting the net stateside.
The trailer arrives (via FirstShowing) nearly a year after its appearance at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals, and if the movie is as good as the trailer looks it may be a shame it’s taken this long to get to theaters. The film follows a love triangle involving a married couple who both begin to form sexual relationships with the same man, completely without knowledge of one another’s affairs. The trailer seems to reveal a little bit too much about the outcome of these respective dalliances, but we’ll let you decide whether you’d like to have that spoiled for yourself. Other than that it looks as if Tykwer’s penchant for beautiful cinematography and kinetic direction is on display even in this low-key drama. The performances by Sophie Rios, Sebastian Shipper and David Striesow all look to be top-quality, so it’s a wonder this one has taken so long to make it to the States.
This writer thought “Run Lola Run” to be a thrill ride along with rest of the world, and even found enjoyable moments in minor films like “The International,” “Perfume: Story of A Murderer,” and his short from “Paris Je’Taime.” While Tykwer hasn’t exactly delivered on the promise of “Run Lola Run,” he’s made some entertaining and handsome-looking films, and this looks as if it could sit right alongside the rest of them. As we said, next up for Tykwer is the Wachowski collaboration “Cloud Atlas,” based on David Mitchell‘s sprawling novel told by several different narrators who are seemingly paving the way for each other’s destiny. While that project will certainly be a massive undertaking, this trailer does have us looking forward to a more modest effort by Tykwer.
“3” will hit theaters in limited release beginning on September 16th.
