“There’s No Winning Anymore For Superman”: Zack Snyder Talks ‘Dawn Of Justice,’ Plus New Photos And More

Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeAs we explained yesterday, Zack Snyder doesn’t deal in nuance. His films make clear the forces of good and evil, the line between silence and loud explosions, and so perhaps it’s not a surprise that the director’s grasp of metaphor isn’t the strongest. And in talking about the upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” he makes some clumsy analogies in explaining where Superman finds himself in the upcoming film.

“He’s starting to see that every action has a reaction,” Snyder said (via THR). “Like, if you’re just taking a cat out of a tree, you can’t touch anything or the arborists will say, ‘He damaged the tree branch when he got the cat down.’ Or, ‘The cat wasn’t neutered, so now there’s thousands of cats.’ There’s no winning anymore for Superman.”

What he’s trying to say — given that, as far as we know, ‘Dawn Of Justice’ isn’t a screed against arborists or veterinarians — is that Superman’s powers are seen as a tool for good and weapon for evil. The superhero can no longer exist simply as a hero. And Henry Cavill explains how that shapes Superman going forward.

“[Superman’s] weakness is that he doesn’t want to hurt anyone,” he told EW. “He doesn’t want to scare anyone, and in that you can take advantage of him. This is someone who is a complete amateur, and he’s facing up against someone who is very well versed in the arts of war.” Basically, can Superhero put on his battle-ready gameface to fight Batman, or are his personal and moral stakes too high?

Meanwhile, the magazine confirms that members of the Justice League including Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) will be making small appearances in ‘Dawn Of Justice,’ which makes a lot of sense given that Snyder starts production on the movie next month. So consider it a brief introduction.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” opens on March 25th. Check out some new images below plus EW writer Anthony Breznican’s thoughts on the film, which he’s already seen.
