During all the noise and nonsense leading up to the release of “Suicide Squad” this summer, as it became public that the studio and director had to find a middle ground for their differing visions, director David Ayer declared that the movie that hit cinemas had his stamp of approval.
“…this cut of the movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, the released movie is my cut,” the director said. “And that’s one of the toughest things about writing, shooting, and directing a film, is you end up with these orphans and you fucking love them and you think they’d be amazing scenes and do these amazing things but the film is a dictatorship (laughs), not a democracy, and just because something’s cool and charismatic doesn’t mean it gets to survive in the final cut. The flow of the movie is the highest master.”
Well, the good news (or not, depending) is that Ayer will get to put some of his orphans back in as Warner Bros. has announced an extended cut of “Suicide Squad” is arriving just in time for the holiday season on Digital HD on November 11th and Blu-ray on December 13th. What will be included?
There will be thirteen minutes of footage not seen in the theatrical release. So, while Jared Leto has already said/complained that there’s enough excised Joker material for another movie (God forbid) it looks like whatever that stuff is, there won’t be much of it here. Let’s just hope there aren’t even more character introduction scenes.
Either way, this is more gravy for Warner Bros. who have already banked $739 million worldwide for the flick. Will the extended version be the corrective to the flawed movie in the same way so many diehard fans claimed the home video version of “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” was? We’ll soon see.
