The Sundance Institute announced that the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival will be January 18-28, 2024. Sundance returned to an in-person event for the first time since 2020 with a rich online component this year. It’s unclear if next year’s online version will equal 2023’s but the institute characterized it as a “robust selection of films available online.” Fingers crossed for those who don’t want to brave the increasingly expensive and cold confines of Park City.

Sundance also announced that submissions for the 2024 edition are now being accepted. For theatrical and documentary features, the early deadline to submit is August 11, the official deadline is September 4, and the late deadline is September 25. The early deadline for shorts is July 31, the official deadline is August 18, and the late deadline is September 4. The television episodic early deadline is August 7, the official deadline is September 1, and the late deadline is September 18 (honestly, much too early if the festival wants to get higher profile television in Park City which might be a good idea). For New Frontier, the early deadline is August 4, the official deadline is August 21, and the late deadline is September 1.
The 2023 edition of the festival saw the world premiere of A24’s Best Picture hopeful “Past Lives” (one of the few films not in the online screening room) as well as A.V. Rockwell’s Dramatic Jury winner, “A Thousand and One” which is still in theaters. Independently produced world premieres such as “Theater Camp,” “Magazine Dreams,” “The Starling Girl,” “Eileen,” “Flora and Son,” “Passages” and “Talk to Me” were all acquired and are imminently set for release or expected to hit theaters later this year.
