There have been countless films about teen underdogs trying to get revenge against bullies. But “Bottoms” seems to be taking that concept and adapting it in a very 2023 sort of way.
As seen in the trailer for “Bottoms,” the film follows the story of two queer teens who are being bullied by the jocks at their high school. In an attempt to get back at them (while also scoring possible sex in the process), the two girls form a pseudo-fight club in their school and train a group of outcasts in the ways of self-defense.
The comedy stars Rachel Sennott, Ayo Edebiri, Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Nicholas Galitzine, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Marshawn Lynch. “Bottoms” is directed by Emma Seligman, based on a script they co-wrote alongside Sennott. Seligman is best known for their breakout debut feature, “Shiva Baby,” which also starred Sennott. As you can imagine, there are quite a few people wondering if “Bottoms” can cement the filmmaker as one of the best up-and-coming directors working today.
We saw “Bottoms” when it debuted at SXSW this year. And in our review, we enjoyed the film but admitted it didn’t live up to “Shiva Baby,” however “…Seligman is an accomplished filmmaker, and if this underdog comedy doesn’t quite fulfill the promise of their debut, it also seems to suggest they can make just about any damn wild-ass movie they want.”
“Bottoms” debuts in theaters on August 25. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
BOTTOMS, a refreshingly unique raunchy comedy, focuses on two girls, PJ and Josie, who start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But PJ and Josie find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.
