We are fast approaching a full five years since the release of “Big Little Lies” Season 2. And it feels as if every few months or so, one of the stars hints at the possibility of Season 3. Eventually, nothing comes from the hints, and we move on. But over the past few months, it really does feel as if Season 3 of the HBO hit is actually in the works. Now, adding immense amounts of fuel to the fire is one of the stars and producers, Reese Witherspoon all but confirming it’s going to happen.

Speaking to Variety at last night’s Golden Globes, Reese Witherspoon was asked about the possibility of “Big Little Lies” Season 3. Unlike the cagey responses we’ve gotten in the past, it appears Witherspoon is willing to back up Nicole Kidman’s recent claims that new episodes are in the works. At least, they’re being developed.
“We are working on it. Nic and I have been working on it a lot,” said Witherspoon.
Of course, with “Big Little Lies” specifically, it’s less about the desire to do more episodes and more about the reality of the situation. HBO executives have publicly spoken about how expensive that show is to produce with the incredibly large salaries of the A-list ensemble cast. Typically, those sorts of budgets are reserved for something like a “Game of Thrones” series. But for a hard-hitting drama with zero dragons? That’s a lot of money. Even though the series has been a critical darling, earning a ton of awards, it’s a tough sell.

That said, if you have Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman working tirelessly to bring it to life, you have to assume HBO will give them the cash to make it happen. There’s no doubt that, even five years later, “Big Little Lies” would be a huge hit for the network/streamer. So, if that’s the case, perhaps it’s time for fans of the series to begin feeling legit excitement for the possibility of a third season.
