Nicole Kidman Says 'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Development Is Moving "Fast & Furious"

With networks and streaming services tightening their purse strings a bit, it’s becoming less and less common that we see massive prestige dramas with huge budgets and superstar casts. The epitome of this trend is “Big Little Lies,” an HBO series where the cast budget is seemingly bigger than production budget. It’s probably a miracle we even got two seasons of the show. But according to Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, a third season is pretty definite.

In a new interview on Vanity Fair, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon talked about their careers and projects they’ve worked on together. And you just had to know that “Big Little Lies” was going to be mentioned. In regards to a third season, it seems as if it’s moved from hopeful to pretty much guaranteed.

“We’re moving fast and furious, and Liane [Moriarty] is delivering the book. Yeah, and we’re in good shape,” said Kidman. “The rest is—we need to shut up, because there’s this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you’ve done it. If you talk about doing it, it’s the dopamine hit of doing it. You feel like you’ve done it.”

Even though “Big Little Lies” earned acclaim, awards, and big viewership numbers for HBO, a third season was hardly a guarantee. There were comments made by HBO executives talking about how the cast salaries were skyrocketing, there was a lack of source material to adapt, and they were dealing with the passing of director-producer Jean-Marc Vallée. It really did feel like a third season was a pipe dream.

However, when you hear Kidman and Witherspoon talk about it, all that is needed is a finished book and HBO approval to really get this show on the road, so to speak.
