While there have been multiple trailers and already folks are reviewing it out of Venice, there appears to still be some secrets left in “Joker: Folie à Deux’ for audiences to discover for themselves. Hell, it wasn’t until the most recent trailer that we found out that Harvey Dent is a character in the film. And according to the actor who plays that role, he didn’t even know he was auditioning for the part when he met Todd Phillips.

In a new interview with i-D, actor Harry Lawtey, who is probably best known for his role in the HBO drama series, “Industry,” talked about landing the coveted role of Harvey Dent in “Joker: Folie à Deux.” For those unaware, in the comic book lore, Harvey Dent is the District Attorney in Gotham who becomes disfigured and turns into the villainous Two Face. Perhaps the most famous film with the character in it is “The Dark Knight,” where Two Face/Dent is portrayed by Aaron Eckhart.
Interestingly, when Lawtey landed the audition for the role, his agents left out the part that it was for Harvey Dent, in an attempt to keep him relatively calm for the audition.
“Funny thing: my agents knew what the part was, but didn’t tell me because they thought it wouldn’t help,” said Lawtey. “I’m so grateful for that because I went in with a bit more focus and openness rather than anxiety.”
Obviously, things must have gone pretty well for the actor, as he did end up with the role. Now, the film hasn’t been released yet, but it would appear Harvey Dent is just the Gotham D.A. and doesn’t get a chance to become Two Face. And that makes sense in a film that is already about one villain.
You can see Lawtey play Harvey Dent in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which debuts in theaters on October 4.
