Luca Guadagnino is a filmmaker who is unafraid of taking some risks in his career. This is the filmmaker who broke out in a major way thanks to “Call Me By Your Name” and then went off to make a remake of “Suspiria.” He’ll go from a crowd-pleasing star-studded film like “Challengers” and then go off to make “Queer.” And apparently, during his younger years, he really wanted to make a ‘Spider-Man’ movie.
Speaking at the Marrakech International Film Festival (via Variety), Luca Guadagnino talked about his desire to direct a ‘Spider-Man’ film. This topic came up during a jury discussion that included jury member Andrew Garfield, who is no stranger to a ‘Spider-Man’ film. After Garfield talked a bit about how his star power he gained from ‘Spider-Man’ movies gave him the ability to make smaller indies, Guadagnino chimed in to explain why he wanted to make a ‘Spider-Man’ movie himself.

“I remember when Sam Raimi directed his first [‘Spider-Man’], and I was 28 or 29, I had these dreams because I’m kind of a megalomaniac, and I wished I had been asked to do one,” said Guadagnino. “So I wish I had directed [Garfield] in ‘Spider-Man.’”
Does this mean we can expect Luca Guadagnino to sign on to direct a ‘Spider-Man’ film nowadays? Absolutely not. Even though he’s not scared of tackling a high profile film—he recently signed on to helm a remake of “American Psycho”—that doesn’t mean he would fit in the Marvel machine. You have to assume he would want more creative control with his take on the superhero. More control than a studio like Marvel is willing to give.
That said, we can daydream about what a Guadagnino “Spider-Man” would look like. Hell, we can even fancast Timothy Chalamet as Peter Parker, given the previous collaborations the two have worked on. It would be a very different vibe than what Marvel and Sony are into, but it would likely be incredibly interesting.
In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for films like “Queer” and “Challengers,” which is just fine by us.
