‘The Brutalist’ Filmmaker Brady Corbet’s Next Film Is Another Immigration Story With Horror & Western Moods

It’s pretty crazy to think that “The Brutalist” marks just the third film in the filmography of director Brady Corbet. The growth he’s shown from “The Childhood of a Leader” to “Vox Lux” to this year’s “The Brutalist” is quite amazing. It makes you wonder what he might have up his sleeve next.

According to a new profile of Brady Corbet in The New Yorker, what the filmmaker has next is apparently a period film that draws from horror and Western genres. That’s a pretty big departure from “The Brutalist,” huh?

“I think that my immediate response to the reception of [‘The Brutalist’] is, like, ‘Well, now you have an opportunity to make something that really pisses everyone off,’” he said.

The profile says the new project, which is untitled, is set in the 1970s and early 1980s. The film, much like “The Brutalist,” will deal with immigration, this time focusing on the Chinese immigrating to California. However, the style is said to be looser and will draw on the horror and Western genres.

“It seems like a good time to really shake viewers,” Corbet said. “I think they can handle it.”

Now, it’s far too early to know when we might see this new film. Corbet is clearly not someone who rushes out projects. It was six years from the release of “Vox Lux” to “The Brutalist.” Of course, we hope it doesn’t take that long for his new film. Regardless, we’ll be keeping an eye on this as it enters development.
