After a cryptic social media post made by franchise star/producer Vin Diesel that had many fans and outlets alike jumping to the conclusion that “The Fast & The Furious 11” had started production, well, that’s not the case.
“I’m on set. People are grinding. Incredible crews are working,” Diesel said in an Instagram post made last Friday. “Over the past three and a half years, we have been grinding to try to make the most amazing finale.”

However, this was simply for a spot connected to The FIFA World Cup tournament (as pointed out by outlets like The Wrap) and aired during the USA/Belgium game (where the European nation trounced Team USA in a 4-1 victory, bouncing the Americans in the process). Diesel indeed reprises his role of Toretto, but isn’t really connected to the upcoming feature film.
This timing didn’t make a lot of sense from the sidelines as no real casting news had been made for “Fast & Furious 11,” something that tends to be a major indicator that pre-production is underway with a production start looming. It’s been mostly crickets, outside that we know that director Louis Leterrier would be coming back after replacing Justin Lin on “Fast X” during a behind-the-scenes dust-up that saw him exit the franchise. Lin is now gearing up to direct Keanu Reeves in the Netflix comic book film “BZRKR,” about an unkillable immortal antihero.
I’m sure folks might be a tad upset about the trolling, but par for the course, from Mister Social Media, who previously convinced people he would be joining the “Avatar” cast after posting a video on the set with James Cameron. But that seemed to be another nothing burger in an attempt to gather attention for himself.
The World Cup spot featuring Diesel as Toretto was posted online by the FOX Soccer account on Twitter, which you can see below (although it’s region-coded, like most things connected to the tournament, so you might not be able to view it). We’ll have to be patient to learn some real updates for “Fast & Furious 11,” as they come from more official channels (odd that we can’t even trust Diesel to be a reliable narrator at this point).
Family.
