A 25-year indie film veteran, Sean Baker has officially been rewarded by his peers. A four-time nominee at the 97th Academy Awards, Baker’s screenwriting skills landed him his first Oscar in the Original Screenplay category for “Anora.” Another win that began with the romantic comedy thriller winning the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Later during the telecast, Baker won the Editing Academy Award.
“Anora” is Baker’s eighth independent film and centers on the title character (Madison), a New York City sex worker who finds herself in the middle of a dangerous family squabble after a quicky marriage to Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn), the wealthy son of a Russian oligarch. The cast also includes Yura Borisov, who earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Aleksei Serebryakov, and Darya Ekamasova.
Over the past few months, Baker has also won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director (and Best Feature), the WGA Award for Original Screenplay, the Producers Guild of America Award for Theatrical Motion Picture, and the New York Film Critics Circle for Best Screenplay.
Baker was previously honored for with Best Director from the NYFCC and Director of the Year from the London Film Critics’ Circle for 2017’s “The Florida Project.” That A24 saw a Baker-directed performance of Willem Dafoe earn a Supporting Actor Oscar nomination and take numerous critics groups honors. His 2015 breakout, “Tangerine,” saw star Mya Taylor win Breakthrough Actor at the Gotham Awards and become the first trans woman actress to win Best Supporting Female at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Other films on Baker’s resume include 2012’s “Starlet,” and 2021’s “Red Rocket.” The latter saw star Simon Rex win Best Actor from both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Spirit Awards.
