Writer/director Wes Anderon has a unique style that sharply sets him apart from most of his contemporaries. The prolific filmmaker, who won his first Oscar last year for his short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” is well aware of his reputation for using somewhat unconventional methods on his film sets. When speaking about his newest feature, family dramedy “The Phoenician Scheme,” last year, Anderson made a point of addressing that notion.
“People who are newcomers on the set or [to] the process of making one of my movies find it strange,” he admitted in an interview with THR. “It’s not necessarily the way movies are normally made…I remember James Caan came to the set of ‘Bottle Rocket,’ and he was really saying, ‘What are you guys doing?’ We were doing things that he thought, ‘This is not how movies are made,’ but he sort of adapted to us.”
Of course, all filmmakers have their own ways of bringing their visions to life. But Anderson’s is definitely one of the more unique and iconic that cinema has ever seen. His latest, “The Phoenician Scheme,” movie follows Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio Del Toro), one of the richest men in Europe and his daughter (newcomer Mia Threapleton), who is also a nun, Sister Liesl, as they run a family business.
“The Phoenician Scheme” stars primarily, del Toro, Threapleton and Michael Cera. However, a big supporting cast is attached in smaller roles and they include Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe, Bill Murray, Richard Ayoade, Mathieu Amalric, Antonia Desplat, Imke Büchel, Jaime Ferkic, Rupert Friend, Aysha Samuel, Sabine Hollweck, Tonio Arango, Imad Mardnli, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Anderson co-wrote the film along with his longtime writing partner Roman Coppola. Producers include Anderson, Jeremy Dawson, Marius Ehlayil, John Peet, and Steven Rales.
Here is the official ynopsis:
A dark tale of espionage following a strained father-daughter relationship within a family business. Twists revolve around betrayal and morally gray choices.
