New set photos from the English production of Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class” have unveiled our first look at “Winter’s Bone” star Jennifer Lawrence and Rose Byrne as their respective characters; shape-shifting mutant Mystique and the Nobel Prize winning confidante of Professor X, Moira MacTaggert.
It’s a much different, more grounded look for Lawrence’s Mystique — especially compared to the blue comic book character and the Rebecca Romijn take in Bryan Singer’s original films — but its also a bit too early to tell. We highly doubt Lawrence will replicate Romijn’s body paint job, but there’s plenty of time for CGI to show off her character’s true talents in the film’s retro, realistic take on the world of mutants set to the backdrop of ’60s culture.
Byrne’s MacTaggert, on the other hand, doesn’t really have as much of a unique physical appearance to compare to and was played by Olivia Williams in the original films. The original trilogy’s opening shot pitting young Magneto, Erik Lensherr, against SS soldiers in a concentration camp was also just revealed as a shot-for-shot inspiration for a sequence in Vaughn’s version.
‘First Class’ will track the early relationship between Lensherr and Charles Xavier— to be played by the talented duo of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender — and their maturation in becoming Magneto and Prof. X whilst following the mutant movement as they face the threat of the Hellfire Club, led by Kevin Bacon’s Sebastien Shaw. A plethora of talent is already on board including the likes of (deep breath) January Jones (Emma Frost), Oliver Platt (Man In Black), Caleb Landry (Phoenix), Lucas Till (Havoc), Edi Gathegi (Darwin), Jason Flemyng (Azazel), Zoe Kravitz (Angel), Bill Milner (young Magneto), Morgan Lily (young Mystique), Alex Gonzalez (Riptide) and Laurence Belcher (young Prof. X).
The film is based on a script by Jane Goldman (“Kick-Ass,” “The Debt”) and is slated to hit theaters June 3rd next year. [ONTD]
