There was a moment there when Guillermo del Toro couldn’t seem to get anything made. A few years back at MGM, he was trying to get "The Hobbit" moving, eventually bailing on the project, leaving it for Peter Jackson to take over and turn into a trilogy. And then there was "At The Mountains Of Madness" which Universal scuttled over its R-rating, leaving del Toro to recently announce he’d compromise and go PG-13. But at the moment, he’s on a tear. His TV series "The Strain" arrives this summer, "Crimson Peak" will drop in 2015 and "Pacific Rim 2" is slated for 2017 (with the franchise also spawning an animated show). And del Toro is eager to keep up the pace.
Speaking with Collider, the director revealed he’s planning to make a small feature before diving back into the world Jaegers. “Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on ‘Pacific Rim 2’ in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting ‘Pacific Rim 2’ at the end of 2015 for release in 2017,” he explained.
del Toro declined to reveal the title, but did say there is "one creature" in it, but he did share someone he would like to take a role. “It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film," he teased. "That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”
Tantalizing stuff. Until there’s more to know, here’s two more teasers for "The Strain."
