The 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out in a ceremony in Santa Monica this afternoon hosted by Aubrey Plaza. Annapurna Films’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” ruled the afternoon taking three awards including Best Film, Best Director (Barry Jenkins) and Best Supporting Actress (Regina King). For the most part, however, Film Independent voters spread the love.

Fox Searchlight’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” took Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Male (Richard E. Grant). “En El Séptimo Día” won the John Cassavetes Award for films under $500,000 while A24’s “Eighth Grade” won Best First Screenplay (Bo Burnham). “First Reformed” won Best Male Lead (Ethan Hawke) and “Sorry to Bother You” won Best First Feature (Boots Riley). “The Wife” won Best Female Lead (Glenn Close) and “You Were Never Really Here” was honored with Best Editing. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” which was infamously snubbed by the Oscars, won Best Documentary. Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma”won Best International Film.
