So, just how big is “Black Panther“? Ridiculously big. It’s turn out the box office numbers reported over the weekend were actually lower than the final tally. According to THR, set a President’s Day weekend record with a staggering $242 million debut. Helping it get there was an astonishing Monday haul with $40.2 million, breaking the previous record held by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $40.1 million. Meanwhile, the three-day total of $201.8 million is the fifth biggest opening of all time. Needless to say, there is a lot to celebrate, and even Disney’s top honcho is joining the chorus that is growing behind the movie.
Bob Iger took to Twitter last night to shout out “Black Panther” for having “obliterated expectations.” There’s no doubt the mouse house probably had a few cases of champagne ordered around. We all knew that the Marvel movie would be a hit, but that is has resonated with so many, this loudly is truly surprising. Not only is it a major win for the team behind the film, but also for diversity and representation. It’s a clear signal to Hollywood that you don’t have to sacrifice multiplex success for new storytelling voices.
