Blur’s Damon Albarn Says He Is Working On The Score To Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial,’ Open-AI Movie

The A.I. gold rush has already produced enough corporate intrigue to fill a mini-series, but Hollywood rarely resists a clean, high-concept headline. Now, it sounds like one of the more interesting creative pairings is taking shape behind the scenes: Damon Albarn, of Blur and Gorillaz fame, says he’s currently working on the score for Luca Guadagnino’sArtificial,” a comedic drama in development at Amazon MGM Studios inspired by the brief executive upheaval around OpenAI boss Sam Altman.

The reveal comes via a new interview with Uncut (via Far Out). And rather than describing a traditional, purely instrumental assignment, Albarn frames it as something more hybrid and song-adjacent—part pop songwriting muscle, part sound design, part orchestral shading. “I’m currently working on the score to Luca Guadagnino’s film ‘Artificial,’ about [OpenAI CEO] Sam Altman. I’m singing some songs and writing some electronic and orchestral backing.”

No other details were provided, but it’s an intriguing pairing. And of course, any conversation about Guadagnino’s modern musical identity comes with a conspicuous recent precedent: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have been central to his soundscape in the last few years. Guadagnino’s 2025 film,” After the Hunt,” was the fourth time in a row the duo has scored for the director, making Albarn’s reported arrival on “Artificial” feel like a notable pivot, or at least a temporary detour.

Which folds neatly into the lingering industry question: whether Albarn is handling “Artificial” entirely on his own, or whether there’s any behind-the-scenes overlap with Reznor and Ross, remains unknown, but frankly, unlikely. What is known is that Nine Inch Nails have publicly extended touring into 2026, which doesn’t exactly suggest wide-open calendars. So it’s very plausible that scheduling realities are part of why Albarn may be stepping in while they’re busy.

“Artificial,” likely arriving later this year—don’t be surprised if it premieres at Venice, Guadagnino works fast— has been described as a comedic drama based on real events at OpenAI, with the screenplay written by Simon Rich, and noted the studio’s push to fast-track the film. Other times, it’s been described as “The Social Network” of A.I.

The film stars Andrew Garfield as OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and it centers on his controversial firing and rehiring in 2023. The cast also features Monica Barbaro (“No Direction Home”) as Open A.I. CTO Mira Murati, Yura Borisov (“Anora”) as former Open A.I. chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Cooper Koch, Cooper Hoffman, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, and Jason Schwartzman. Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet, Chris O’Dowd and Mark Rylance also have roles in the movie, with legendary cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed (“Clockers”) staying on as DP after his work in “After The Hunt.”

If Albarn’s involvement holds through post, it’s a fascinating fit for Guadagnino’s slicker, sharper recent stretch: a filmmaker with a taste for elegant surfaces that often conceal something queasy underneath. Albarn, meanwhile, has spent decades toggling between intimacy and artifice—melody that feels handmade, set against production that can sound synthetic, fractured, or eerily calm—through Gorillaz, his solo work, or occasional reteams with Blur. He’s previously scored “Ravenous” (1999), “101 Reykjavík” (2000), plus “Broken” (2012), and “The Kid Who Would Be King” (2019), the latter two scored through Albarn’s musical collective, Electric Wave Bureau.
