UPDATE: According to an email sent from Amazon, the film, titled “Moose,” that is scheduled to hit Prime Video on June 29 is actually from 2015 and isn’t the Fred Durst-directed feature that was originally reported. Apologies. We’re still waiting to see this!
It’s been well over a year since we last heard word on the upcoming film from director (and Limp Bizkit frontman) Fred Durst and star John Travolta, titled “Moose.” At the time, the actor was raving about how much fun he had filming the movie, and how it was his “favorite experience” in his entire career. While we aren’t sure if that translates to quality, what we do know is that Travolta looks batshit crazy in the movie, and lucky for film fans, we’ll finally get the chance to see it soon enough, under its new title “The Fanatic.”
According to Bloody Disgusting, it’s being reported that “The Fanatic” has been picked up by Amazon, no less, for a VOD release later this month, with a select theatrical release in the fall. Now, let’s not immediately jump to conclusions and view this as a way for Amazon and the distributor to quickly, and quietly, dump the film on VOD, pretending that the monstrosity never existed. Well, okay, that’s a safe conclusion to draw, isn’t it?
“The Fanatic” is a film about an obsessed, creepy fan (Travolta) that feels spurned by his favorite action film star (Devon Sawa, of “Idle Hands” fame) and begins stalking the celebrity. It’s been said that the film is based on a real-life encounter that Durst had with a fan. Believe it or not, about 20 years ago, there were definitely actual fans of Durst and his nu-metal band. Lots of Adidas, baggy jeans, and backward baseball caps during that era. Dark, dark times, indeed.
But really, story aside, the real reason to check out this film is the fact that Travolta has been all over the place in regards to roles, lately. He seemingly was poised for a big comeback after his incredible role on “The People v. OJ Simpson.” However, in the last couple of years, that hope has faded, and he’s back doing some…less than great films. Those include “Gotti,” which might be the worst movie of the last few years, and the recent “Speed Kills,” which is best known for its interesting marketing materials.
In “The Fanatic,” judging by the pictures, at least, Travolta looks to be going big with the role. His outfit is ludicrous. His hairstyle is..something. And somehow we get the promise of wild Travolta with Fred Durst writing and directing the film? Sign us up!
Per the report, “The Fanatic” will arrive on VOD, courtesy of Amazon, on June 29, with a theatrical run beginning September 6. Plan accordingly.
