'Super-Cannes': Brandon Cronenberg To Write & Direct A Sci-Fi Thriller Series From The Author Of 'Crash'

With the incredibly disturbing “Possessor,” filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg has already cemented his status as the go-to person if you want to make a dark, fucked up, semi-futuristic thriller. Really, there’s just no one else that can do it with the same level of strange. Thankfully, his next project seems to keep this trend going, as he is now set to tackle “Super-Cannes.”

According to Deadline, Brandon Cronenberg is set to write and direct a new limited series, “Super-Cannes,” based on the JG Ballard novel of the same name. And though the title might bring up thoughts of a lavish French film festival with snooty critics and A-list celebrities, “Super-Cannes” is definitely not that. The series will tell the story of a group of global elite that create an uber-capitalist, high-tech exclusive society in Cannes. There, the group dabbles in all forms of crime, sexual perversion, madness, and manipulation. If this doesn’t have Brandon Cronenberg written all over it, then what does?

“‘Super-Cannes’ was an incredibly prescient novel that is more relevant now than ever — a heady blend of cutting politics and deviant psychology, built around a deeply satisfying detective story,” said Cronenberg. “I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to adapt it, and to be working on the series with Anti-Worlds and Ringside.”

As mentioned, Cronenberg is probably best known for his most recent feature, “Possessor.” That film mixed sci-fi with horror in a retro-futuristic thriller about an assassin that takes over the minds of innocent people to complete her deadly missions. And much like his famous filmmaking father, David, Brandon Cronenberg is not afraid to use body horror, experimental visuals, and any other tricks to get under your skin. In addition to “Possessor,” the filmmaker has also directed the underrated thriller, “Antiviral.”

Interestingly, author JG Ballard previously wrote the novel, “Crash,” which was adapted by David Cronenberg into a controversial film back in 1996. A release date for “Super-Cannes” has yet to be announced.
