As promised, a civilian edition of “The Traitors” is on the way. NBC and Peacock revealed this morning that “The Traitors: New Blood” will debut on Thursday, Sept. 17. Hosted once again by Alan Cumming, the series will invite 22 contestants to participate in a cutthroat game of murder and deceit for the chance to win up to $250,000.
The series premiere will have a two-hour premiere on NBC. Episodes will drop on Peacock the following day. It’s unclear if traditional episodes will be one hour or 90 minutes. Most episodes of the previous seasons on Peacock are around 60 minutes without commercials.
NBC says that 60,000 people auditioned for the series.
The first season of the U.S. incarnation of “The Traitors” featured 10 celebrities and 10 civilians. The subsequent seasons featured all celebrity participants and became a streaming sensation. The U.K. version of the series, which launched subsequently and essentially films back to back with the U.S. version in Scotland, remained fully civilian until a “celebrity” version broke BBC viewership records last year. Most international versions of “The Traitors” have only featured “civilian” contestants.
A traditional celebrity season of “The Traitors” is expected to drop in January.
Over eight seasons, “The Traitors” has won eight Emmy Awards, including back-to-back wins for Outstanding Reality Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality Competition Program for Cumming. It is the odds-on favorite to win both categories again this September.
“The Traitors: New Blood” debuts at 8:00 PM ET / PT on NBC. It will be available to stream on Peacock the next day.
