‘Caught Stealing’ First Look: Austin Butler Stars In Darren Aronofsky’s New Late ‘90s New York Odyssey

Actor Austin Butler has been hotter than a pistol since his Best Actor Oscar nomination for Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” biopic, lining up projects with an impressive group of filmmakers such as Denis Villeneuve, Jeff Nichols, Luca Guadagnino, Sean Durkin, Edward Berger, Ari Aster (the Cannes-bound “Eddington“), and potentially Michael Mann (rumored for a role in “Heat 2“). Another big project for the rising star is Darren Aronofsky‘s “Caught Stealing,” and thanks to Vanity Fair, we have a batch of first-look photos from the pic set in NYC in the late 1990s.

“Caught Stealing,” an adaptation of the Charlie Huston novel, is heading to theaters on August 29, distributed by Sony Pictures. It boasts quite the supporting cast, which includes Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Will Brill, Bad Bunny, Griffin Dunne, Vincent D’Onofrio, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, NYC rapper Action Bronson, previously seen in “The Irishman,” George Abud, and Carol Kane.

In the film, Butler plays a former baseball player, Henry “Hank” Thompson, who gets caught up in a criminal plot.

“Everyone thinks that East Village belongs to them. And it’s funny, because I believe the East Village belongs to me,” Aronofsky told Vanity Fair when talking about the East Village being a character in itself in the film. “I’ve been going there since I was in high school. I was a little kid from Brooklyn, and that was the coolest place in the world to be, partly because it was the only place that served underage minors at the time. We would just always go to the East Village and get into trouble.”

Aronofsky’s last effort was “The Whale,” leading to Brendan Fraser earning a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the drama, so the expectations couldn’t be higher for Butler to enter the awards race for “Caught Stealing.”

We shouldn’t have to wait too much longer before Sony drops a trailer for the summer release. Until then, you can check out that group of first-look photos from “Caught Stealing” below.
