Close, Holy Spider And Triangle of Sadness Top 2022 European Film Awards Noms

The 35th European Film Awards nominations were announced Tuesday morning and, for the first time in recent memory, they may influence the upcoming 2023 Oscar season. International Film contenders Lukas Dhont’s “Close” and Ali Abbasi’s “Holy Spider” as well as Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” taking four nominations each. They were joined in the prestigious European Film category by Carla Simón’s “Alcarràs” and Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage.”

This year’s ceremony will occur on December 10, in Reykjavík, Iceland. Again, the early announcement of this year’s winners will be a boon for movies not only in the International Film race but pictures such as “Close” attempting to crack the Best Picture field and contenders such as “Corsage” where Vicky Krieps has an outside shot at a Best Actress nomination.

Other notable nominees included “Saint Omer’s” Alice Diop and “EO’s” Jerzy Skolimowski for European Director, “Parallel Mothers” Penélope Cruz and “One Fine Morning’s” Léa Seydoux for European Actress, “Aftersun’s” Paul Mescal for European Actor (perhaps a Best Actor darkhorse) and, in something of a surprise, Oscar-winner Kenneth Branagh for European Screenwriter for “Belfast.”
