Today was do or die for "Community." June 30th marked the final day Sony Pictures Television had options on the cast members for the cult-loved show, and the prospects of continuing the series looked dire after NBC canceled it after five seasons. Meanwhile, Hulu toyed with but eventually abandoned the idea of picking it up, leaving Sony about one week to try and put together a deal for the show. And they did.
EW reports that "Community" is now going online, with Yahoo signing up for 13 more episodes. With Netflix, Amazon and Hulu all fighting for the share of the digital pie with original content, this is a pretty big get for Yahoo, who have also been trying to play in those waters, but lacking the kind of star-driven shows of their competitors. “I am very pleased that ‘Community’ will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” writer/creator Dan Harmon said in a statement. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, ‘Big Bang Theory.’ Look out, Bang Bus!” If you don’t know what Bang Bus is, for the love of God, do not Google it at work.
So, keep an eye out this fall for season six. And the next obvious question now is: when’s the movie?
