Dan Aykroyd & Ernie Hudson Have Confirmed They'll Reprise Their Roles In The New 'Ghostbusters' Film

Since the new “Ghostbusters” film, directed by Jason Reitman, was announced, it’s been rumored and reported that most of the original cast of the 1984 comedy would be back to pass the torch in the film. We’ve had a couple of reports linking Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and the rest to the new film, but we haven’t really heard from the actors themselves if they’d be returning. Well, until now.

In an interview on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Dan Aykroyd was asked about the future of the “Ghostbusters” franchise, and the comedic actor seemingly confirmed that he is part of the new film, as well as “most” of the original cast of the 1984 classic.

“I’m not in the pictures so much anymore. We’ve got the ‘Ghostbusters’ movie that we’re working on now and I will have to be performing in that,” Aykroyd said.

He added, “Now, Ivan Reitman’s son, Jason, has written a new movie called, well, it’s gonna be ‘Ghostbusters,’ the third movie. It will be all, most of the original people and then young stars.”

When pressed to explore that statement further, specifically about Bill Murray’s involvement, Aykroyd nodded and said, “We’re hoping…”

One cast member that is definitely showing up alongside Aykroyd is Ernie Hudson. While he wasn’t on a podcast talking about the film, the actor was on camera explaining that he’s currently in the middle of shooting the new “Ghostbusters” film. In a Cameo video (these are videos that you can pay for that feature your favorite celebrities giving birthday shoutouts and whatever else you want them to say), Hudson confirmed that he’s in the film, but didn’t go into specifics about who else might be joining him.

So, with Aykroyd and Hudson confirmed this week, and Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts previously admitting to being involved, it would appear that the only major cast members that haven’t punched their tickets are Murray and Rick Moranis. And as a fan of both of those men, I sure do hope that they come back to get the gang back together.

The original cast joins the new ‘Busters that include Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Mckenna Grace. The new “Ghostbusters” will be released on July 10, 2020.
