Danny Boyle’s latest film, “Yesterday,” is poised to be released in theaters soon. But even though that film has been receiving favorable reviews and is being seen as yet another win for Boyle, people are more fascinated by another film. A film that Boyle isn’t directing, “Bond 25.” And speaking about his brief experience as a ‘Bond’ director, he revealed that he’s just not really cut out for the franchise filmmaking world.
Boyle recently spoke to Metro about his time on ‘Bond.’ And instead of taking his brief flirtation with the franchise as an inspiration to go back to blockbuster, tentpole, franchise filmmaking, the director is taking a more cautious approach moving forward.

“I learned my lesson that I am not cut out otherwise you’re digging in the same hole,” Boyle said. “I am better not quite in the mainstream franchise movies, is the honest answer.”
As mentioned, Boyle was previously attached to ‘Bond 25,’ but left the production before filming could begin due to disagreements with the way the studio wanted the franchise to go and how he (and his writer John Hodges) saw the film going. Those dreaded creative differences. And apparently, dealing so briefly with the studio system and how it handles IP, Boyle is ready to swear off that style of filmmaking for good.
Honestly, this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. While I’m sure Boyle is more than capable of directing an amazing ‘Bond’ film, or whatever franchise he signed on to, if you glance at his filmography, it’s clear that the man works best when he’s working on his own things. “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Trainspotting,” “The Beach,” “Sunshine, “127 Hours,” and pretty much every other film show that Boyle doesn’t necessarily play by the typical franchise filmmaking rules, and is all the better for it.
So, any film fans hoping for Boyle’s superhero take or perhaps him jumping onto the ‘Fast & Furious’ train are going to be sad. But for those ready for more wild, creative, and interesting films from the filmmaker, it looks like his time with ‘Bond’ put him back on the right track.
